Some will go home to Britain now but others will stay on board for the entire 101-night world extravaganza. And who could blame them? I freely admit to a case of excited butterflies upon stepping onto Arcadia's gangway to leave Bangkok. You don't forget the excitement of a midnight "sailaway" (as the ship's company calls this late-night departure ritual), where the twinkling lights of the port fade and the ship glides towards the open sea and on to its next foreign stopover. The fluttering tummy returns when you wake up in your cabin on days at sea with the rhythmic shoosh of the ocean below your balcony and a slightly unnerving expanse of blue in every direction. Particularly if you're sailing to somewhere you haven't been before. And particularly for older passengers, it must be a comfort to arrive in a new city and not have to organise anything yourself. Before arrival in each port you can watch a "guide book" tour on your television, giving the attraction highlights, shopping tips and advice on how to get the most out of a whistle-stop visit. Passengers can join a host of tours catering to a selection of tastes or head off into town for their own adventures. And if that isn't enough excitment, on sea days you can look forward to taking part in an incredibly varied program of activities, deck sports and parties. That said, our comfortable and spacious balcony cabin with good-sized bathroom worked out to be about $300 a day - when you're talking about seeing the world as well, that's pretty good value in anyone's language.
